CRORE TO SPECIAL OLYMPIC WINNERS
In appreciation
of the remarkable performance of the special category young boys
and girls of India in Special Olympics held recently, Shri Ram
Naik, Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas announced here today
that each gold medal winner would be paid cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000/-,
Silver winner Rs. 50,000/- and Bronze Rs. 25,000/-. In addition,
Shri Naik announced a contribution of Rs. 38,00,000/- to the Special
Olympics Bharat Trust who organised the events on behalf of India.
This will make the total amount of Rs. 1 crore. Shri Naik called
for special efforts towards promoting sports activities among
the mentally challenged youths.
Special Olympics
2003 were held recently at Dublin in Ireland. There were competitions
in 18 games out of which India participated in 11 games. India
has won 34 Gold Medals, 36 Silver Medals and 40 Bronze Medals
making a total of 110 against 104 Medals in 1999 Olympics. The
medal tally in the 1999 Olympics included 25 Gold, 49 Silver and
30 Bronze.
