LEGISLATION IN CURRENT FINANCIAL YEAR


During the current financial year, the Legislative Department drafted 106 Bills, out of which 93 Bills have already been passed by the Houses of Parliament. The number of Bills enacted is the highest for any year during the last 25 years and the third highest since 1947. The total number of legislations enacted during the last over three years of the Government would, thus, come to 210.

The important Bills include the Constitution (Amendment) Bill making education as a Fundamental Fright for children in the age group of 6-14 years, the economic and corporate laws relating to the Securities and Exchange Board of India, the Unit Trust of India, the Securitization and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest Bill, the Competition Bill, the Prevention of Money Laundering Bill and so on.

In the category of welfare legislations, the Consumer Protection (Amendment) Bill, the Wild Life Protection (Amendment) Bill and the Biological Diversity Bill are the important ones.

As for the health legislations, the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Amendment Bill and some other Bills were drafted and passed by the Houses of Parliament.

Some other important Bills include the Freedom of Information Bill and the two Code of Civil Procedure (Amendment) Bills.
