The Minister of Agro and Rural Industries,
Shri Karia Munda released here today a book on the life of great
freedom fighter Birsa Munda written by Dr. Anuj Kumar Dhan and
published by the Publications Division of the Ministry of Information
and Broadcasting. The Minister of Information and Broadcasting,
Smt. Sushma Swaraj presided over the function.
Smt. Swaraj said
that Birsa Munda became a living legend in the very young age
of 25. His acts of bravery have become a part of the folklore
among the people as they were during the freedom struggle. The
tribals of Chota Nagpur area worship him till today. He lit a
torch of freedom in the minds of the people and his clarion call
for the freedom of the country still rings in the ears of the
people, she said.
The Publications
Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is the
largest and leading public sector publishing organization in the
country. The Division has immortalized great works of leading
lights of freedom movement such as 1857, the Gospel of the Buddha,
Ajanta Murals, Bharat mein Angrezi Raj and Nataraja in Arts, Thought
and Literature. From a modest beginning in 1941, the organization
has traversed a wide cross-section taking under its sweeping breath
works under Art, Culture and History, Flora and Fauna, Land and
People, Builders of Modern India, Culture Leaders of India, Reference
Works, Speeches and Writings, Biographies, Science and Technology
and Children’s Literature, running over 7,000 titles of which
1,500 are live alongwith an annual component of 150 additions.
A prestigious
milestone of the Division is Gandhian Literature of which the
Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi running over hundred volumes
is one of its kind in the history of publication. The Division
has capsuled this huge project into an interactive CD with voice
footage of Gandhi in original being a feather in its cap.
The Division
has 21 journals under its band with Yojana as a multi-lingual
edition in most of the Indian languages devoted to development
and planning. Kurukshetra in Hindi and English caters to rural
upliftment while Bal Bharati and Ajkal focus upon children issues
and literature in Hindi and Urdu respectively.
