The
calendar year 2002 for the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of the Steel
Authority of India Limited has been the best ever since inception
in terms of production and despatches. By producing 1.60 million
tonnes of hot metal, 1.43 millon tonnes of continuous cast slabs
and 1.47 million tonnes of saleable steel, it has registered growth
of 15 per cent, 13 per cent and 14 per cent over the calendar
year 2001. The despatches of saleable steel have also registered
a growth of 13 per cent over the previous year. As regards techno-economic
parameters, the coke rate came down by 8.5 per cent from 647 kg
per tonne of hot metal in 2001 to 592 kg per tonne in 2002. The
energy consumption reduced substantially during this period.
The Plant has made
maximum utilisation of the capacity of its plant units during
the year 2002. The Sinter Plant II and the Silicon Steel Mill
continued to operate at 100 per cent of their capacity in December
2002 and the capacity utilisation of the Hot Strip Mill was 109
per cent.
The production of
sinter, hotmetal, continuous cast slab and saleable steel during
the first three quarters of this fiscal have been the best since
inception. During the period the plant produced all time high
1.2 million tonnes of hotmetal, 1.05 million tonnes of continuous
cast slab and 1.1 million tonne of saleable steel registering
a growth of 13 to 14 per cent compared to the corresponding period
last year. The despatch of saleable steel increased to 1.07 million
tonnes against 0.96 million tonnes during these 9 months last
year recording a growth of more than 11 per cent. With these achievements
RSP collective are making all out efforts to make the year 2003
a "year of profit".
