LAW MINISTER ADDRESSES INDIAN LEGAL SERVICE OFFICIALS


The Union Minister of Law and Justice, Shri K. Jana Krishnamurthi has said that officials of the Indian Legal Service should put in more hard work and efforts to maximize the productivity of his Ministry to regulate efficiently the business of the Government of India. Addressing 125 member strong Indian Legal Service cadre officials in a New Year get together here this morning, the Law Minister complimented the officials for their excellent performance during the year 2002.

The Law Minister talked at length about improving efficiency and productivity in the Government and said that he was happy to note that the Department of Legal Affairs tendered 47,500 legal advices out of 49,000 references received to this effect to various Ministries and Departments in the Government during 2002, which was a record. The Minister complimented the Legislative Department for the highest number of legislation during the first three years of the Government totaling 131 Bills and eight Constitution Amendment Acts that were okayed by the Parliament since Independence. He hoped that the tempo of good performance would be sustained with improved efficiency during the new year.

The Minister appreciated the initiatives of the Department of Justice during the year for expediting appointment of highest number of judges for the High Courts, galvanizing the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for augmenting judiciary in States and Union Territories, stepping up computerization of courts in four metros and other subordinate judiciary apart from upgrading computerization of High Courts in four metro cities on par with that of the Supreme Court, expediting the process of setting up of 1734 Fast Track Courts to dispose of sessions level backlog of cases especially of those relating to under trials languishing in jails.

The Law Minister announced an in house open door policy for officials of his Ministry stating that he was ever ready to meet them and address their grievances.
