ALL INDIA CONSUMER PRICE INDEX NUMBER FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS DECREASED BY ONE POINT


All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) on base 1982=100 for the month of January, 2003 has decreased by one point to stand at 483 (four hundred & eighty three). The decrease in index is mainly due to fall in prices of Pulses, Onion, Vegetables, Sugar, etc.

All India Consumer Price Index Number for January, 2002 had decreased by 2 points.

The Fall/Rise in index varies from centre to centre. In 45 centres, decrease in index was noticed between 1 to 19 points, in 5 centres it remained constant and in 20 centres it recorded an increase of 1 to 8 points when compared to previous month.

During the month Rangapara-Tezpur centre experienced the maximum decrease of 19 points mainly on account of the decline in the prices of Rice, Arhar Dal, Onion, Vegetables, etc. Whereas, Agra centre experienced the maximum increase of 8 points. The increase in index was due to rise in the prices of Wheat, Wheat Atta, Firewood, Soft Coke, Washing Soap, Grinding Charges, etc. However, the index remained stationary in five centres viz. Coonoor, Chandigarh, Faridabad, Hyderabad and Quilon.

The point to point rate of inflation, based on the CPI-IW has increased from 3.20 % in December, 2002 to 3.43% in January, 2003. In January, 2002 it was 4.94 %.
