PROCUREMENT OF OBSOLETE SPARE PARTS

The obsolete spare parts worth crores of rupees are accumulated in the three wings of Defence Forces. The spares are of various types, origin and vintage. The details of obsolete spares parts, their estimated cost, origin and year of procurement are not readily available.

The quantum of obsolete spare parts auctioned during the year 2000-2001 was 6804 worth Rs. 2.99 crores, in the year 2001-2002 it was 9380 worth 3.19 crore and in the year 2002-2003 it is 14143 valued at Rs. 3.55 crore.

There is established procedure in the services for assessing the requirements of spares. The requirements of various spares in reviewed from time to time and all necessary steps are taken to ensure their optimum utilization.

This information was given by the Defence Minister Shri George Fernandes in a written reply to Col (Retd) Sona Ram Choudhary in Lok Sabha today.
