LESS PRODUCTION OF POWER THAN INSTALLED CAPACITY

RAJYA SABHA

Generation from the power plants located in Eastern Region is less than the installed capacity because of less demand in the region. However, 1200-1300 MW during peak period and about 2000 MW during off-peak period are being exported from Eastern Region to other regions.

The installed capacity of hydro generating plants in the Eastern Region is 2459 MW.

38 Power Plants (25 MW and above) with installed capacity of 15,420 MW and another 776 MW comprising small/mini/micro/diesel/wind energy plants have been set up till December, 2002 in Eastern Region.

Plant Load Factor (PLF) of thermal generating units in the Eastern Region during the period April-December, 2002 was 50.6 per cent. Low PLF is mainly attributable to ageing of generating units, inadequate sub-transmission & distribution network and low demand in the region.

This information was given by Smt. Jayawanti Mehta, Minister of State for Power, in a written reply to a question by Shri Kapil Sibal and Shri Ram Jethmalani in the Rajya Sabha today.
