LOK SABHA
The production
of aluminium by the primary producers in the country during
2001-02 was 6.34 lakh tonnes against 6.41 lakh tonnes in 2000-01
and 6.18 lakh tonnes during 1999-00. There are seven aluminium
smelters in the country with an anunual capacity of 7.47 lakh
tonnes. Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO) has a smelter
at Korba, Chhatisgarh with a capacity of 1 lakh tonnes, National
Aluminium Company (NALCO) at Angul, Orissa with 2.3 lakh tonnes,
Hindalco Industries Limited at Renukut, Uttar Pradesh with a
capacity 2.75 lakh tonnes and Madras Aluminium Company Limited
(MALCO) at Mettur, Tamil Nadu with 25, 000 tonnes. Indian Aluminium
Company Limited (INDAL)has a capacity of 1.17 lakh tonnes and
its three smelters are situated at Hirakud(Orissa), Alupuram
(Kerala) and Belgaon (Karnataka).
