INDO-BELARUSIAN JOINT CENTRES IN LASER AND OPTICS IN THE OFFING

India and Belarus and to set up joint research and development-cum-technology transfer centres in optic components as well as laser. The advanced research centre for powder metallurgy and new materials located in Hyderabad is a shining example of scientific collaboration between the two sides. The Optic Components Centre will be basically for Defence R&D while the laser will be for applications in medical research and health care. This information was given by the Minister of State for Science and Technology Shri Bachi Singh Rawat here today while inaugurating a function to mark ‘Days of Belarusian Science and Technology in India’. An exposition of scientific achievements of Belarus was also opened by Shri Rawat.

Shri Rawat said, the occasion provides an important opportunity for scientists and experts from both the sides to interact and work towards strengthening cooperation. He said, like Belarus, India should also lay a high degree of emphasis on scientific research & development and work for the industrial application of the fruits of research. Previous such exhibitions of Belarusian technology organised in India has resulted in substantial supply of equipment and transfer of technologies in the defence sector. Now, there is a large potential for extending these to non-Defence areas, he said.

The Secretary, Department of Science & Technology Prof. V S Ramamurthy, said Belarus has made high-level technological achievements in areas like powder metallurgy, lasers, electronics, heat and mass transfer and machine building, etc. The research centre in Hyderabad has helped evolve a number of technologies in powder metallurgy and new materials. The interaction between the two sides is now being intensified in other areas so that India can benefit from Belarusian scientific advancements, he said.

Thirty-two top scientific institutions and organisations from Belarus are represented at the exhibition, projecting their fruits of research and technological developments. Representatives from Indian industry and business enterprises are having direct interaction with the Belarusian exhibitors to strike out deals and benefit from the same.
