THAILAND IMPOSES ANTI DUMPING DUTY ON INDIAN STEEL EXPORTS

Rajya Sabha

Thailand has announced in December 2002, anti dumping duty of 60.88 per cent on exports of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and 66.16 per cent on Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO). It initiated anti dumping proceedings against hot rolled flat steel originating from 11 countries including India.

The Minister for Steel, Shri Braja Kishore Tripathy, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today stated that the Thailand Industrial Standard Institution (TISI) certification has been mandatory for each thickness/size of imported material. Hence imports into Thailand are restricted only from those producers whose products are approved by TISI. The Minister further stated that export of hot rolled flat steel products to Thailand from SAIL has been nil since the imposition of anti dumping duty.

If this continues, Indian export to Thailand will be affected in a great way. The Indian exporters have decided to respond individually to the investigations initiated by Thailand. SAIL has proposed a minimum price undertaking, which has not been agreed by the Government of Thailand.
