The Minister of
Information and Broadcasting, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad has said
that appropriate and stable legal and policy frameworks have
to be put in place to match the pace of technology which is
fastly overtaking us. The challenge of global convergence, which
has become a reality enjoins upon us as to how do we synergise
the concerns of the individual countries. How do we coordinate
our steps so that the people got the best advantage out of it,
he said.
Chairing a panel
discussion on ‘Dawn of the New ICE Age – Legal issues arising
from Convergence’, organized by the Inter Pacific Bar Association,
here today, Shri Prasad said that the Convergence has also thrown
up the whole lot of issues like licences, taxation and revenue
generation as the technology in the information, communication
and internet recognizes no barriers. The information revolution
has already knocked down the boundaries, he said.
The Member, Planning
Commission, Shri N. K. Singh, Chairman, NASSCOM, Shri Kiran
Karnic and Editor-in-Chief of Indian Express, Shri Shekhar Gupta
participated in the panel discussion and discussed the opportunities
thrown up by convergence and also the problems and challenges
brought along, which require the attention of policy framers,
lawmakers, the practitioners of law and the whole lot of technology
users. The Conference is attended by over 200 lawyers from about
50 countries from the Asia-Pacific region.
