FILM INDUSTRY URGED TO BE GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE


The Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad has called upon the film industry to be globally competitive in order to establish its class. He said the industry must educate the policy makers, the media and the people about the potential of the industry.

Opening the ‘Entertainment Industry Round-Table’ organised by the FICCI, here today, Shri Prasad said that though the entertainment sector has been given the industry status but it has to take steps for corporate governance and transparency in order to derive the best advantage. The vast talent available in the sector must be polished and chiseled to bring out the best creativity. He said, let this decade become ‘Decade of Entertainment Industry’ as the last decade was ‘IT decade’.

Referring to the overall concern expressed over the content put out private TV channels, the Minister said that these channels can not be oblivion of the cultural milieu in which they operate. He advocated self-control by the channels failing which content regulation would have to be considered though he expressed himself against any moral policing.

She Prasad assured the industry leaders that he would take all their genuine problems with other ministries wherever required. The priority would be given to finalising co-production treaties with other countries in order to facilitate shooting of foreign films in India.

Those who participated in the ‘Round-Table’ included S/Shri Yash Chopra, Yash Johar, Subhash Ghai, Bobby Bedi from the film industry and representatives of Broadcast, Music, TV Content, Multiplexes, Radio, Animation, Cable and Broadband, Film Distribution, Event Management sectors and CETMA and discussed the enormous potential of the entertainment industry and some problems like the video and music piracy, uplinking and film production facing the industry.
