Human skills need
to be optimally utilised as the largest number of jobs will
be created in the service sector. This was stated by Shri C.P.
Thakur, Minister for North Eastern Affairs & SSI at a conclave
on ‘North-East Youth in Service Industry – an untapped potential,
strategic vision: Mizoram, here today. Appreciating the
initiative taken at the meeting to boost employment opportunities
in the region, Shri Thakur said that human talent and natural
resources in the North-East need to be properly addressed. He
said that as we are moving towards a knowledge-based economy,
efforts should be made to bring its advantages to the youth
in the North-East.
Several guest
speakers from tourism and hospitality industry pointed out the
potential for North-East youth to enter the service industry.
It was pointed out that North-East region is ideally suitable
for developing various types of tourism activities such as eco-tourism,
health tourism, soft adventure tourism, ethnic tourism and golf
tourism among others. Some of the entrepreneurial opportunities
for the youth were also highlighted such as tour operations,
hotels and restaurants, handicrafts, resorts, transport and
conferences & events.
A concept paper
by the Government of Mizoram designating Year 2003 for Human
Resource Development in Service Industry with focus on Employment
Generation & Entrepreneurship was released by Shri C.P.
Thakur. A large number of students from the region participated
in the meeting. Several scholarships for the youth from North
East were also announced.
