GOVERNMENT TO STRENGTHEN CONSUMER COOPERATIVES


Consumer Cooperatives will be given all possible assistance to strengthen its functioning, said Shri Sharad Yadav, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution here today. Inaugurating a two-day National Conference on Consumer Cooperatives the Minister said that his ministry would not hesitate in seeking help and assistance from other ministries like finance, commerce and agriculture for this purpose. The conference is being organised by National Consumer Cooperatives Federation of India Ltd.

The Minister pointed out that excessive control and interference of the Government in the functioning of consumer cooperatives had already been removed by the adoption of the National Cooperatives Policy and Multi State Cooperative Societies Act and urged Consumer Cooperatives to improve their quality in services to the community at large.

The theme of the two-day National Conference is " Role of the consumer cooperatives in the distributive trade under the changed economic scenario". The conference will debate on various subjects like present status of consumer cooperatives, their relevance and importance in the distributive trade, steps needed to strengthen them to meet the challenges ahead and role of Federal Cooperative Organisations etc.
