An Infoway project
is underway for the hill State of Uttaranchal. The Technology
Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) of the
Department of Science & Technology (DST), the Government
of Uttaranchal and the IL&FS Infrastructure Development
Corporation (IIDC) signed a tripartite agreement here today
in this regard. The Project seeks to connect the entire state
upto block level with Internet through V-SATs, optic fibre networks
and Wireless in Local Loop (WLL) in a public-private sector
partnership. It will provide user application to the people
of Uttaranchal and the State Government.
The project involves
leveraging government resources to develop applications that
will enhance revenue and employment generation and extend IT
connectivity to far flung areas of the hill state. It will establish
user interface modules that include community information centres,
upgradation of PCO to handle Internet based usages, telemedicine,
disaster management and catalysing eco-tourism.
It may be recalled
that TIFAC held a meeting in Almora couple of years ago for
the development of Uttaranchal through S&T intervention.
Since then, it has been evolving programmes for the progress
of the State as it required special developmental strategies.
The last programme launched by TIFAC was a mobile hospital for
the State.
