ALL INDIA CONSUMER PRICE INDEX NUMBER FOR INDUSTIAL WORKERS DECREASES BY FIVE POINTS


All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) on base 1982=100 for the month of December, 2002 has decreased by 5 points to stand at 484 (four hundred & eighty four). The decrease in index is mainly due to fall in prices of Pulses, Onion, Vegetables, Gur, Sugar, etc.

All India Consumer Price Index Number for December, 2001 had decreased by 3 points. The Fall/Rise in index varies from centre to centre. In 52 centres decrease in index was noticed between 1 to 14 points, in 6 centres it remained constant and in 12 centres it recorded an increase of 1 to 15 points when compared to previous month.

During the month, Kolkata centre experienced the maximum decrease of 14 points mainly on account of the decline in the prices of Onion, Vegetables, Bus Fare, etc. Whereas, Quilon centre experienced the maximum increase of 15 points. The increase in index was due to rise in the prices of Rice, Fish Fresh, Fish Dry, Vegetables, Pan Leaves, Kerosene Oil etc. However, the index remained stationary in 6 centres viz. Pondicherry, Vishakhapatnam, Bangalore, Rajkot, Alwaye, and Jharia.

The index in respect of six main centres during December, 2002 stands at the following level:-

The point to point rate of inflation, based on the CPI-IW has decreased from 3.60% in November, 2002 to 3.20% in December, 2002. In December, 2001 it was 5.16%.
