DEV ANAND TO RECEIVE DADA SAHEB PHALKE
AWARD
The legendary film
star Shri Dev Anand has been awarded the Dada Saheb Phalke Award
for the year 2002 for his outstanding contribution to the Indian
film industry. The Dada Saheb Phalke Award carries a cash prize
of Rs. two lakhs, a Shawl and a Swarna Kamal and was instituted
in the year 1969 to commemorate the outstanding contribution of
late Shri Dada Saheb Phalke to the Indian film industry. The evergreen
hero of bollywood will be the 34th recipient of the
award at a ceremony being organized here on the 29th
of this month.
Born on 26th
September, 1923 in Gurdaspur, Punjab as Devdutt Pishorimal Anand,
and an Arts graduate from Punjab University; Shri Deva Anand went
to Bombay to join elder brother Chetan Anand. Started acting at
Prabhat (1945) where he met Guru Dutt and first hit, ‘Ziddi’ at
Bombay Talkies. Together with Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, he ushered
in the dominant acting idiom of post-independence Hindi Cinema.
His style is demarcated from naturalist method-acting modes of
Motilal, Balraj Sahni and Ashok Kumar of Kismet (1943). With directors
Chetan and Vijay Anand, Guru Dutt and Subodh Mukherjee, along
with playback singer Kishore Kumar, he satirized and reconstituted
generic styles such as Capra’s (Nau Do Gyrah), John Hustons’ (Jaal).
His films are about
love, romance and drama and the stars of his films become icons
for film buffs. The musical scores of his films have taken their
place among the popular music in Indian film history. Among his
most memorable films are, ‘Baazi’, ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘CID’, ‘Paying
Guest’, ‘Kala Pani’, ‘Hum Dono’, ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne’, ‘Guide’,
‘Jewel Thief’, ‘Johnny Mera Naam’, ‘Here Rama Hare Krishna’, ‘Des
Pardes’ etc. His films have won five National Awards and various
other awards. He has received recognition and honour, both in
India and abroad for his contribution to cinema.
