IMPORT OF CHINESE SILK FABRICS
LOK SABHA
Import of silk fabrics
from China has increased from 766 MT in 2001-02 to 3290 MT in
2002-03 with corresponding value of Rs.84.29 crore and Rs.191.52
crore respectively.
There has been an
increase in import of Chinese silk fabrics after the removal of
quantitative restrictions on 1.4.2001. It is too early to assess
firm figures of imports since levy of final antidumping duty on
raw silk imports in July, 2003, to be able to analyse them.
A petition has since
been filed by Karnataka Weavers Associations before the Directorate
General of Anti-Dumping & Allied Duties, the designated authority,
requesting for initiation of antidumping investigations on imports
of silk fabrics from China. Through Research and Technological
efforts of Central Silk Board breakthrough has been achieved for
production of international standard silk to enhance the availability
of superior quality silk indigenously.

was given by the Minister of State for Textiles Shri G.N. Ramachandran
in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
