ALL INDIA CONSUMER PRICE INDEX NUMBERS FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS ON BASE 1982=100 FOR THE MONTH OF JULY, 2003 INCREASES BY 4 POINTS


All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) on base 1982=100 for the month of July, 2003 has increased by 4 points to stand at 501 (Five hundred & one). The increase in index is mainly due to rise in the prices of Rice, Wheat, Fish Fresh, Milk, Onion, Vegetables & Fruits, Sugar and increse of Housing Index of 41st Round. All India consumer Price Index Number for July, 2002 had increased by 5 points.

The rise/fall in index varies from centre to centre. In 58 centres increase in index was noticed between 1 to 22 points, in 4 centres it remained constant and in 8 centres it recorded a decrease of 1 to 6 points when compared to previous month.

During the month Quilon centre experienced the maximum increase of 22 points on account of increase in prices of Rice, coconut oil, fish Fresh, Vegetables & Fruits, Bidi, House Rent, etc. Whereas, Coimbatore centre experienced the maximum decrease of 6 points. The decrease in index was due to decrease in prices of Onion, Vegetables & Fruits, Kerosene Oil, Flower Garlands etc. However, the index remained stationary in 4 centres viz. Visakhapatnam, Mundakayam, Howrah and Noamundi.

The index in respect of six main centres during July, 2003 stood at the following level:

  1. Ahmedabad 501
  2. Bangalore 481
  3. Kolkata 545
  4. Chennai 538
  5. Delhi 577
  6. Mumbai 589

The point to point rate of inflation, based on the CPI-IW has decreased from 4.41% in June 2003 to 4.16% in July, 2003. In July, 2002 it was 3.89%.
