RAILWAYS EARNINGS FROM FREIGHT
DURING APRIL-JULY,
2003
The Railways earned
Rs. 8780.45 crores from 178.63 million tones of freight traffic
during the first four months of the current financial year 2003-2004
as compared to Rs. 8654.76 crores during the corresponding period
of the previous year. This recorded an increase of 1.45 per cent.
Of the total
earnings from the freight traffic during the period, Rs. 3802.92
crores came from transportation of coal from pit heads to the
user industry, Rs. 381.52 crores from raw material to steel plants,
Rs. 420.76 crores from finished iron and steel, Rs. 237.13 crores
from iron ore for exports, Rs. 750.47 crores from cement, Rs.
1034.19 crores from foodgrains, Rs. 329.33 crores from fertilizers,
Rs. 789.20 crores from Petroleum, Oil and Lubricant (POL) and
Rs. 1034.93 crores from other goods.
