CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR URBAN NON-MANUAL EMPLOYEES FOR JULY 2003 (BASE 1984-85=100)


The All India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees (CPI(UNME)), on base 1984-85=100, for the month of July, 2003 has been released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation; together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The All India CPI (UNME) for July, 2003 is 421, which is 4 points more than the index for the month of June, 2003. At the major group level, the index in July, 2003 when compared to last month that is June, 2003 has increased by 2.38% in the case of "Housing" followed by "Food, Beverages & Tobacco", which increased by 1.22%. At the sub-group level, the index for "Vegetables" has increased by 7.17% whereas the index for "Sugar, Honey etc" has increased by 3.82%. With the corresponding All India index for July, 2002 being 406, the index for the month of July, 2003 has shown a rise of 3.7 percent over a year.

The average index for the period April 2003 to July 2003 works out to 417, which is higher by 4.0% over the average index of 401 for the corresponding period of the previous year. Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India, and 59 selected urban centres in the country, for July, 2003; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for July, 2003 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for July, 2002 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI (UNME) for July, 2003 in respect of 59 selected urban centres, with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely July, 2002. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from – 0.9 to 10.5 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Mangalore and the least in the case of Kohima. The increases are 0.0 to 2.0 percent for 9 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 25 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 20 centres, 6.1 to 8.0 percent for 3 centres and more than 8.0 per cent for 2 centres. As many as 26 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the All India figure of 3.7 percent while 32 centres have recorded a higher percentage increase as compared to the All-India average whereas 1 centre has the same percentage increased as that of All-India figure.
