CONSERVATION
OF FLOOD WATER
Water
being a State subject, all water resources projects including
those for conservation of flood water are planned, implemented
and maintained by the concerned State Governments. A number of
projects have been implemented in the country with the objective
of conserving river flow during the monsoon and its use during
non-monsoon period for various purposes. Multipurpose projects
have also been planned and implemented with the objectives of
flood management as well as other uses. Schemes for watershed
development also help to some extent in reducing intensity of
flood and conservation of water. As a long term measure, the Government
of India has formulated a National Perspective Plan for water
resources development which envisages interlinking various Peninsular
rivers and Himalayan rivers which will inter-alia mitigate floods
and combat droughts.
The multipurpose
projects with flood control as one of its objectives have been
found to be very effective in controlling miseries and devastation.
The above
