SCHEDULED AREAS AND ST COMMISSION VISITS MAHARASHTRA


The Scheduled and Scheduled Tribe Areas headed by Shri Dileep Singh Bhuria alongwith five other members is visiting the Vidharba region of Maharashtra from 2nd August to 9th August, 2003. The Commission has since sent Questionnaires to the State Governments/Union Territory Administrations having tribal population, Central Ministries/Departments as well as voluntary agencies working for the welfare and development of STs.

The Commission has already undertaken tours of several States. During this tour, the Commission shall be visiting Nagpur, Gadchiroli, Allapalli, Ballarpur, Chandrapur, Wardha (Sevagram), Yeovatmal, Amravati, Chikhaldhra etc. The Commission would like to visit a number of ITDPs, Primitive Tribal Group Projects, Ashram Schools, Forest Villages for ascertaining enforcement of protective and ameliorative safeguards extended to them. During the tour, the Commission will also have close interaction with officers and non-official agencies as well as meet the tribal leaders in order to have a first-hand study of the socio-economic conditions of tribals.

As per the terms of reference, the Commission is currently looking into the Constitutional safeguards provided for STs with a special reference to the Fifth and Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and give a report to the President of India on the working of these safeguards and give an outline on the vision for the future and formulate a viable comprehensive tribal policy.
