GOVT. URGED TO FACILITATE IPR STUDY

At a National Seminar organized here today to mark the world intellectual property day, the government was urged to facilitate study of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in the academia. Giving the clarion call for this, while inaugurating the seminar, the Minister of State for Science and Technology Shri Bachi Singh Rawat underlined the need to set up IPR departments at universities and colleges with close cooperation among law, natural sciences and economic departments. The seminar on patents, protection, valuation and commercialization was organized jointly by the National Research Development Corporation and the Controller General, Patents, Designs and Trade marks.

Highlighting the need for a cycle of intellectual creation whereby technologies evolved are properly IPR-protected for effective exploitation and recognized as property of high economic value, Shri Rawat said, there is growing desire for strong IPR protection world wide, after the establishment of the WTO-TRIPS agreement. He also pointed out that patenting without commercialization will have no meaning, as value exploitation must go hand in hand. Awareness creation about patenting also assumes greater significance in this era of globalisation, Shri Rawat said.

The Managing Director of the NRDC Shri N.K. Sharma said, the Corporation has evolved a multi-media training package on IPR from which all can benefit. The NRDC, a technology transfer organization has also set up its own IPR Consultancy Division for the benefit of the Industry, Shri Sharma said.

Keeping pace with the fast changing scenario in IPR, the seminar was specially designed to cater to indepth exposition of Patent procedures, effective protection, most economical routes to obtain IPR in developed countries etc.
