12 THOUSAND HOUSES CONSTRUCTED UNDER VALMIKI AMBEDKAR AWAS YOJANA

Construction of 12,399 dwelling units and 6658 toilets has been completed under Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY)during the last two years. The scheme was launched on 2.12.2001.

During 2001-02, Central subsidy of Rs. 73.56 crore was released to 16 States/Union Territories for construction/upgradation of 27271 dwelling units and 4605 toilet seats. Out of this, construction of 5447 dwelling units and 3000 toilets was completed whereas construction of 8222 dwelling units is under progress. In Karnataka construction of all the 3333 housing units sanctioned during the year was completed. In Andhra Pradesh, 742 units were completed against 4 thousand sanctioned, whereas in Tamilnadu construction of 680 houses was completed against 2610 sanctioned during the year.

During 2002-03, Central subsidy of Rs. 218.35 crore was released to 17 States/UTs for construction/up gradation of 110388 dwelling units and 21488 toilet seats. Out of this, construction of 6952 dwelling units and 3658 toilet seats has been completed whereas construction of 42682 dwelling units and 7825 toilet seats is under progress. In Tamilnadu 5481 and in Karnataka 1455 houses have been built under the scheme during the year.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation Shri Pon. Radhakrishana in a written reply to the question of Shri Chinmayananda Swami and Shri R.R. Gavit in Lok Sabha today.

Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana is the first scheme of its kind meant exclusively for slums dwellers with a Central subsidy of 50 percent.
