NEED FOR GOOD JUSTICE DELIVERY SYSTEM STRESSED

The Minister of Information & Broadcasting, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that if good governance and reforms have to succeed, a good justice delivery system has to be ensured. He said an easier access to criminal justice and speedier dispensation of justice is required and some new instruments of justice are immediately needed to meet the requirements of globalization and domestic reforms.

Delivering the Keynote Address at the two-day Seminar on "Access to Justice" organised by the Supreme Court Advocates on Record and UNDP, Shri Prasad said the judges and other legal officers need continuous in-service training to keep them abreast with the changes. He said the moral authority of a judge is his real power and the sustenance of this moral authority has to be ensured.

Referring to the changing scenario in view of the globalisation and reforms, Shri Prasad said that we cannot miss the compelling needs of domestic reforms. Access to justice has to be linked to economic growth. For instance, he said, the Copyright Act which also deals with the piracy in music and CD etc. has a low priority so far as our courts and law enforcing agencies are concerned. But the entertainment sector which is otherwise getting importance worldwide is being bled by piracy which is driving the music companies out of business. All such new issues need to be addressed, he said.
