WORLD BANK ASSISTANCE FOR IMPROVEMENT
OF WATER SUPPLY & SANITATION IN GUWAHATI

Government of Assam
has sought assistance of the World Bank under Water and Sanitation
Programme for South Asia (WSP-SA) to explore strategic options
available for improving water supply and sanitation for Guwahati
city, as well as institutional and technical aspects of the water
and sanitation metwork. The proposal has been accepted ‘in principle’
from technical angle by the Central Public Health & Environmental
Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO) and has been recommended by
the Ministry of Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation to
Department of Economic Affairs on 17.4.03 for World Bank assistance
under Water and Sanitation Programme for South Asia (WSP-SA)
Government of
Assam had also submitted a project proposal entitled "Greater
Guwahati Water Supply Scheme" at an estimated cost of Rs.
399.48 crore received by this Ministry through Deptt. of Economic
Affairs for exploring the possibility of external assistance from
Japan Bank for International cooperation. Technical comments on
the project proposal have been communicated by the Central Public
Health & Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO) to
the Assam Urban Water Supply & Sewerage Board in November,
2002 for revision of the proposal. Revised proposal is awaited
from the Assam Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
