GIRLS HOSTELS


The Ministry of Human Resource Development is implementing a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Strengthening Boarding and Hostel facilities for girls under which 100% assistance is provided for running these hostels. But, there is no provision for construction of Hostels under this Scheme.

However, the Scheme of Area Intensive and Madrasa Modernisation Programme provides grants for the construction of Girls Hostels in identified area of concentration of Educationally Backward Minorities. So far, assistance has been provided for 20 girl hostels, one in the State of Haryana, one in Rajasthan, 6 in Maharashtra and 12 in Uttar Pradesh. The State of Orissa is not covered under the Scheme.

Additional Central Assistance of Rs. 37.50 crores was allocated by Planning Commission for the construction/operationalisation of 400 ST Girls Hostels from 1998-99 to 2000-01 under the Revised Long Term Action Plan for the Kalahandi, Bolangir and Koraput (KBK) districts of Orissa.

This information was given by the Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Dr. Vallabhbhai Kathiria in written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
