MONSOON FORECAST MUCH IN ADVANCE

The Indian Meteorological Department will announce for the first time much in advance the long range forecast of South West Monsoon rainfall – 2003. The Director General of the Department, Dr. R.R. Kelkar will make the announcement tomorrow at least 40 days earlier than the normal date of 25th May every year. Indian Meteorological Department says this has become possible as a result of the adoption of new models of monsoon forecast.

It may be recalled that the long-range monsoon forecast last year went astray due to variety of factors beyond control including global warming. Later, at a review at the Parliamentary Consultative Committee Meeting of the Ministry of Science and Technology, it was decided to adopt new models keeping aside the models followed so far.

The meeting underscored the need to evolve new effective models of rainfall prediction. Dr. Kelkar is slated to divulge details of new models here tomorrow.
