STEADY RISE IN NUMBER AND CIRCULATION OF NEWSPAPERS PRESS
IN INDIA- 2002 PRESENTED
The number of registered
newspapers and periodicals in India rose from 49,145 to 51,960
in 2001, registering a growth of 5.73 per cent. The total circulation
of publications in 2001 was 11,82,57,597 copies. According to
the Press in India- 2002, the number of dailies increased from
5364 in 2000 to 5638 in 2001. The total circulation of daily newspapers
also rose from 5,91,29,183 copies in 2000 to 5,98,73,881 in 2001.

– 2002 was presented by the Registrar of Newspapers for India,
Shri G. D Beliya to the Secretary, Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting, Shri Pawan Chopra here today.

the report are:
- The largest circulated Daily:
The Hindu, English, Chennai(printed from nine centers) (9,37,222
copies)
- The second largest circulated
Daily: The Hindustan Times, English, Delhi (Printed from eleven
centers) (9,09,278)
- The third largest circulated Daily:
Anand Bazar Patrika, Bengali, Kolkata(8,76,727)
- The largest circulated multi-edition
Daily: The Times of India, English (Nine editions) (21,52,046)
- The second largest circulated
multi-edition Daily: Malayala Manorma, Malayalm, Kerla ( Nine
editions) ( 12,72,823)
- The largest circulated periodicals:
Saras Salil(Fortnightly) Hindi, Delhi(11,01,598)
- The total number of registered
newspapers, as on 31st December 2001: 51,960.
- The total number of new newspapers
registerd in the year: 2824.
- Percentage of growth of registered
publications over the previous year: 5.73 Per cent.
- The largest number of newspapers
& periodicals in any Indian language: Hindi(20,589)
- The second largest number of newspapers
& periodicals in any language: English(7,596).
- The third largest number of newspapers
& periodicals in any laguage: Marathi(2,943)
- The state publishing the largest
number of newspapers: Uttar Pradesh(8,397)
- The state publishing the second
largest number of newspapers: Delhi(6,923)
- The state publishing the third
largest number of newspapers: Maharashtra(6,018).
