ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF DGPs AND IGPs OF STATES


The Annual Conference of DGPs/IGPs of States, Union Territories and Heads of Central Police Organizations will be held at Vigyan Bhawan from September 29 to October 01, 2002. The Prime Minister, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be giving away the medals to the IB Officers, who have been awarded President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service during the Conference.

The Annual Conference is being organized by the Intelligence Bureau since 1920. The main object of holding these Conferences is to provide a forum to the Police leadership in the States/UTs and the Centre to discuss various problems faced by the police throughout the country towards efficient and effective policing and better service to the people/society. These Conferences give an opportunity for the experience and ideas of the senior most police officers in the country to be pooled together and views exchanged freely on problems of common interest and to work out ways and means to modernize and prepare the police to meet newer challenges and make it community-friendly.

The Conference is attended by Police Officers from States/UTs Police Forces and also the Central Police Organizations. The Conference will be inaugurated and addressed by the Hon’ble Deputy Prime Minister, Shri L.K. Advani. The Prime Minister will address the Conference on the 30th Septmber, 2002 after giving away the awards. With a view to boosting the morale of the officers and men of the Intelligence Bureau, Indian Police Medals for Meritorious Service and President’s Police Medals for Distinguished Service are also given away to the recipient officers of the Intelligence Bureau by the Hon’ble Deputy Prime Minister and the Hon’ble Prime Minister respectively at this Conference. The delegates interact with the Union Home Secretary and officers of MHA and subjects of topical and national interest are discussed threadbare and recommendations sent to MHA. The delegates also call on the President of India on the concluding day of the Conference.

This year’s Conference is the 37th Conference of the Chief of Police and Intelligence Chiefs of States/UTs and Central Police Organizations.

The main emphasis of the Conference this year would be on sensitizing different States on terrorism related aspects, reviewing the criminal Justice system in India, challenges posed by cyber crimes and the need to have adequate security to ensure national security. The Conference would also discuss the implications in India of the Maoist activity in Nepal, our coastal security network to prevent terrorists from engaging in subversion and sabotage, need for systems to evaluate the performance of the police. Criminals are familiar with technology these days so the need to develop innovative methods of policing to track criminals are some of the important issues which would be taken up by the Conference.
