RS. 3.5 CRORES PACKAGE FOR WATERWAYS AT ALLAHABAD ANNOUNCED


In order to provide a phillip to the initiatives being taken to devleop National Waterways No. 1 at Allahabad, Union Minister of Shipping Shri Vedprakash Goyal convenied a high-powered meeting of Inland Waterways officials at Allahabad yesterday to take stock of the situation. The Minister announced to construct a jetty worth Rs. 3.5 crores at Allahabad within few months. He has also instructed the officials to complete the dredging work in the navigational route within months time after the water level recedes. The Minister said similar initiatives are in the pipeline all along NW-1 at important points in the route.

This 1620 kms long Waterways No. 1 is spread from Allahabad to Kolkata , one of the longest Waterways of the world. NW-1 may cater the water transport cutting across the whole Indo-Gangatic plain of the country. Water transport being one of the cheapest mode of transport and also considering the availability of commerce in the hinterland of this region, the development of NW-1 commands an unsurmountable importance for the movement of different types of cargo and generation of employment at local levels.

The activities of inland Water Transport is being monitored on time bound basis by Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).
