VRIKSHAMITRA AWARDS ANNOUNCED


Tata Steel, West Bokaro Division, Rajiv Gandhi Watershed Management Mission, Jhabua, Indian Farm Forestry Development Cooperative Limited, New Delhi, Swamy Ayyappan Poongavanam Puraruddharana Eco-Development Committee, Kerala and Grama Panchayat Badodiya, Rajasthan were among the 19 winners of Indira Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra Awards that were announced by the Minister of Environment and Forests, Shri T.R.Baalu here today. These Awards for ‘exceptional contribution to afforestation and wasteland development’ include a Cash Prize of Rs.50,000/- each, a citation and a medallion. These Awards will be presented to the Winners on the 16th of this month at Bangalore on the occasion of International Ozone Day celebration.

Wince 1986, Vrikshamitra Awards are being presented to individuals, panchayats, voluntary agencies, educational institutions, local bodies and corporate sector on the basis of innovative efforts and pioneering work in afforestation with special focus on peoples’ participation.

The 19 winners for the years 2000 and 1999 include three each from Maharashtra and Rajasthan, two each from Orissa and Jharkhand and one each from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal and New Delhi.

The winners of Vrikshamitra Awards are :

Maharashtra

Dr. Prakash Tulsiram, Yerme, Latur District, Shri Baburao Laxman, Pethakar, Sholapur District, and Shri Shahaji Dnyanadeo Narnavar, West Wada, Thane District.

Rajashthan

Badodiya Grampanchayat, Jaipur District, Gram Bharati Samiti, Amber, Japipur District and Shri Chain Roop Dayama, P.T. Teacher, R.P.U.P. Vidyalaya, Chhapar, Churu District.

Jharkhad

Tata Steel, West Bokaro Division and Noamundi Iron Ore, West Singhbhum District.

Orissa

Bhuan Vanasurakshya Samiti, Bhuan, Puri District and Centre for Community Development, Parlakhamundi, Gajapati District.

Andhra Pradesh

Divisional Forest Officer. Mahaboobnagar Forest Division.

Kerala

Swamy Ayyappan Poongavanam Punaruddharana Eco-Development Committee, Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady, Idukki District.
