QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE

BASED INDEX (BASE 1993-94=100) FOR JULY


The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of July 2002 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 170.6 which is higher by 6.4% as compared to the month of July 2001.

The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of July 2002 stand at 138.0, 175.4, and 166.3 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 12.5%, 5.7% and 6.2% as compared to July 2001. The cumulative growth in the three sectors during April-July, 2002 over the corresponding period of 2001 has been 8.4%, 4.3% and 4.3%, respectively. The overall growth in the General Index during this period has been 4.7%.

Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for July 2002, the indices for June 2002 have undergone the first revision and those for April 2002 the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. While there are no significant revisions in the indices of manufacturing and electricity sectors, the index of mining sector for April 2002 has been lowered by 1.8% due to a downward revision of the production of Coal, Petroleum (Crude), Chromite, Manganese Ore and Phosphorite. There is no significant revision in the indices for June 2002.

As many as 12 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of July 2002 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel) have shown the highest growth of 30.3%, followed by 17.0% in Jute and Other Vegetable Fibre Textiles (except cotton) and 15.8% in Transport Equipment and Parts. On the other hand, Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures have shown a negative growth of 23.0% followed by a decline of 9.4% in Wool, Silk and Man-Made Fibre Textiles and 6.6% in Leather and Leather & Fur Products.

As per Use-based classification, the growth in July 2002 over July 2001 is 7.1% in Basic goods, 9.7% in Capital goods and 2.3% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-)7.6% and 15.6% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 8.5%.

Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of July 2002, alongwith the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
