FESTIVAL QUOTA OF SUGAR INCREASED TO
TWO LAKH TONNES
Shri Sharad Yadav, Minister
of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has decided
to increase the festival quota of sugar to 2 lakh tonnes during
the current calendar year. This decision has been taken on request
from various State Governments for increased allocation of festival
quota of sugar. The State Governments and Union Territory Administrations
have been advised to lift the additional festival quota and make
available sugar to the ration cardholders during the festival
period. Government has been allocating about one lakh tonne of
levy sugar per annum as festival quota to meet the requirement
of sugar for various festivals.
The
production of sugar during the current sugar season 2001-02 (as
on June 6 2002) was 178.35 lakh tonnes (provisional).
