CAUVERY MONITORING COMMITTEE MEETS KARNATAKA TO RELEASE 8000 CUSEC

The 14th Meeting of the
Cauvery Monitoring Committee under the Cauvery River Authority
(CRA) discussed here today the distress sharing formula as proposed
by the Central Water Commission (CWC). No conclusion was arrived
at in today’s meeting, Karnataka Government made an offer proposing
releases from Karnataka reservoirs over the months of September
and October 2002 to be regulated in such a manner so as to ensure
an average of 8000 cusec per day at Mettur. Tamil Nadu Government
insisted on 1.25 TMC per day as ordered by the Supreme Court.
The meeting was chaired by Shri A.K.Goswami,
Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources. The Chief Secretaries
of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry attended. Government
of Kerala was represented by Special Secretary (Irrigation). The
matter will now be placed before the CRA.
