INFLATION RATE &
CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS RISES
The
rate of inflation based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial
Workers continued to witness an upward trend with a marginal rise
of 0.44 percentage point during September 2002. It went
up from 3.86 per cent in August 2002 to 4.30 per cent in September
2002. In September 2001 the inflation rate was 4.73%.
The All India Consumer
Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for September,
2002 (base 1982-100) went up by one point to stand at 485 (four
hundred & eighty five) points. The increase is mainly due
to rise in prices of Rice, Wheat, Groundnut oil, Onions, Vegetables
& Fruits, etc. The CPI-IW during the corresponding period
last year had decreased by one point.
The Rise/ Fall in
index varied from centre to centre. In 45 centres, the index increased
between 1 to 10 points and in 6 centres it remained constant whereas
in another 19 centres it recorded a decrease of 1 to 9 points
when compared to the previous month.
During the month
Monghyr-Jamalpur (Bihar) and Mudakayam (Kerala) centres experienced
the maximum increase of 10 points each. On the other hand Alwaye
centre (Kerala) experienced the maximum decrease of 7 points.
The index remained stationery in 6 centres viz. Tiruchirapally
(T.N), Madurai (T.N), Agra (U.P), Asansol (W.B), Gudur (A.P) and
Mercara (Karnataka).
The index in respect
of six main centres for September, 2002 stood at the following
level: -
