The Textiles Ministry
has fixed an ambitious export target of US$ 15 billion for the
year 2002-03 visualizing 37% growth over the actual performance
of 2001-02. The Union Minister for Textile, Shri Kashiram Rana
has assured every possible support to the exporters in attaining
this target and hoped that the exports will exceed the set target.
Shri Rana was chairing
a review meeting with the chairmen and chief executives of Textile
Sector Export Promotion Councils here today. This meeting was
held to take stock of the progress in textile exports vis-à-vis
targets for the current year and to identify steps for fully achieving
the export targets. The Minister expressed his satisfaction at
having managed to reverse the downtrend in exports, which was
prevailing in recent past. He said that the Government has announced
a series of measures for enhancing the global competitiveness
of textile industry and for ushering in more and more congenial
atmosphere for exports. The new Exim Policy also contains a number
of positive features with specific focus on textile and garment
exports.
In the meeting,
Shri Rana told that except for wool and coir, all other textile
segments had shown positive growth. He reiterated the need to
aim at a much higher growth in the future. It may be recalled
that an export target of US$ 50 billion has been set to be achieved
by 2010.
The representatives
of various Export Promotion Councils came up with problems they
are facing in achieving their respective export targets. Remedial
and supportive measures were also discussed so that the exporters
can achieve the targets in full at the end of the year.
According to the
latest available data, the textile exports during April – July
2002 has amounted to US$ 3846 million thereby recording a growth
of nearly 6.7 per cent over the last year.
