PRESIDENT MEETS MENTALLY CHALLENGED CHILDREN

The President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam met a group of mentally challenged children and their teachers from Delhi here today. The children presented him with gifts that they had personally made. They also sang various songs learnt at their school.

In his interaction with the children and the teachers, Dr. Kalam said the children were normal in every way except that their mental faculties were not developed. The President suggested that the teachers should therefore concentrate on developing the other skills which these children posses. The President told the faculty that by teaching the children they were doing "God’s work". Dr. Kalam also recited the poem, "O Almighty Light the Lamp of Knowledge", a poem that he had penned after a visit to one of the schools for the mentally challenged.
