PRESIDENT DR. KALAM PAYS
VISIT TO TRIPURA
The President of
India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam arrived in Agartala today on a day’s
visit to Tripura. The President’s engagement included laying of
foundation stone of multi-fruit processing unit at Budhjungnagar
near Agartala. The President was associated with this project
earlier in his capacity of Principal Scientific Advisor to Government
of India as it was an idea conceived under India Millennium Mission
2020. The President was assured by the Chairman of Trans-India
Agro Food Products Limited that the project will be fully functional
by May 2003. The President also inaugurated a Telemedicine Unit
at GB Pant Hospital. The unit has been set-up in coordination
with CARE Heart Foundation, Hyderabad.
The President
interacted with the doctors and patients at a hospital in Kailasahar,
190 km from Agartala and doctors at CARE Hospital Hyderabad through
the new facility established in this unit. Speaking on the occasion
the President said that the project shows how telemedicine can
be brought to various parts of the country to give best possible
medical care to the patients who are in need of it. A memorandum
of understanding for establishing Tripura Super Specialty Hospital
Society was also exchanged between the hospital authorities and
CARE Foundation.
The President
earlier interacted with about 600 high school children at Rabindra
Satabarshiki Bhavan and later with about 800 college students
at MBB College. The President stated that Tripura is a state with
full natural and human resources and with the maximum utilization
of these resources the state can become one of the most prosperous
and developed state of the country.
He exhorted the
young boys and girls to fully exploit their thinking faculty to
generate new productive and positive ideas which when translated
into action would ensure the emergence of a fully developed state.
It would generate an environment conducive to further growth of
all sectors in the state.
The President
later in the evening met delegations of political leaders, students,
freedom fighters, physically challenged people and some social
organizations at Raj Bhavan.
The President
also visited Nirmala Shishu Home set-up by the Mother Teresa Charitable
Trust.
