PRESIDENT VISITS TRIPURA AND MANIPUR

The President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is undertaking an intensive tour of the North Eastern states of the country. In the first phase, he will be visiting Tripura and Manipur on 4th and 5th October 2002. The President had earlier visited the North Eastern states at several occasions in his capacity as Scientific Adviser to the Government of India and shared technological innovations for solving certain problems.

His programme in Tripura includes laying a foundation stone of a state-of-the-art fruit processing unit in Bodhjungnagar with government, industry, research and development laboratories cooperation. The President will also inaugurate a tele-medicine facility center established by CARE Foundation in GB Pant Hospital at Agartala. The two projects are aimed at bringing the latest technologies at the door-step of the North Eastern region. The tele-medicine center will help the people of these far-flung areas to have access to the best medical advice in the country without having to leave Agartala.

In Manipur, the President will inaugurate another technology power project which is based on heavy fuel. He will also hold interactive meetings with children, youth and teachers from various schools and universities.

During these visits, the President will interact with a large cross-section of people including Ministers, officials, leaders, industrialists, scientists and social workers. He would like to use this opportunity to have a first-hand knowledge of the on-going development works in these states and also to get to know the pressing problems being faced by the people. The possibilities of taking up innovative development projects and infusing appropriate technological solutions into the on-going projects would be explored. The interactive sessions with the school children and youth will be used to ignite the young minds with a vision of a developed and prosperous India.

All the states of the North Eastern region are well endowed with resources – both natural as well as human and thus, have a potential to develop at a rapid pace. The President strongly believes that by giving a suitable impetus to the mission of development process and by partnership between hard-working people of these states, the whole area could be quickly transformed into a beacon of peace and prosperity.
