ROMELT SAIL
COLLOQUIUM ON USE OF MUNICIPAL
SOLID WASTES
Romelt-SAIL (India)
Ltd. (RSIL), organized today a colloquium on treatment of Municipal
Solid Wastes (MSW) by romelt technology, developed by the Moscow
Institute of Steel and Alloys (MISA). The technology that aimed
at using any size and grade of iron bearing materials with non-coking
coal as fuel for iron making, could be used to extract two useful
materials- electricity and slags from the MSW. This would help
solve the disposal of MSW, a gigantic task of the towns and cities.
RSIL is a joint venture company of Steel Authority of India Ltd
(SAIL)., National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) and the
three Russian Companies MISA, AMET Ltd. And Tyazhpromexport (TPE).
The colloquium was
attended by scientists, technologists and social workers involved
in environment management and pollution control and officials
from the concerned Government Ministries. Russian Scientist Dr.
V.S. Valavin of MISA gave a presentation on the working of the
romelt technology for treating MSW. He said that it is the most
environment -friendly and cost -effective technology to treat
the solid wastes. The products electric power and slags can also
be fruitfully utilized by the municipal corporations.
The Managing Director
of the RSIL, Shri J.S. Saluja said that the organization has a
licence to market the technology in India, South East Asia, China,
the Middle East and African countries. He informed that NMDC and
NALCO are commissioning two plants in Chhattisgarh and Orissa
States using romelt technology. These plants would use huge iron
ore fines and red mud, byproducts of mines and plants. The speakers
outlined the range and reach of the technology to take care of
the MSW and concluded that this technology can be feasible solutions
to the MSW problem in the towns and cities.
