LABOUR MINISTER WELCOMES SUGGESTION TO DISCUSS REPORT OF THE NATIONAL COMMISSION ON LABOUR IN RAJYA SABHA

The Labour Minister Dr. Sahib Singh told Rajya Sabha during Question Hour today that the House can discuss in detail the Report of the National Commission on Labour whenever it wants. He welcomed the suggestion made by the Deputy Chairperson Dr. Najma Heptulla in this regard. He said that the recommendations of the Commission on various aspects of the labour are based on in-depth examination and analysis of all issues. Dr. Sahib Singh said that the Government feels that the Report of the Commission is not contradictory. He said that the Commission has recommended that social security be provided to 36 crore workers in the unorganised sector. The Labour Minister said that he has approached Members of Parliament to elicit their opinion as well as that of the political parties on the Report of the Commission before taking any decision on it. Dr. Sahib Singh said that he is continuing consultations with the representatives of the Employers and the Employees in this regard. He said that the Report was discussed at the Indian Labour Conference which is a tri-partite body at the national level. The Labour Minister said still he was prepared to consider suggestions of any labour organisation before taking a final decision. He said that a two-days Seminar on unorganised sector was recently organised in the capital in which the representatives of the employers, employees, state and central government participated. He said the Commission has recommended to rationalise the central labour laws from 50 to about 12.
