NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON NIDDCP, RCH, AIDS AWARENESS
SOCIAL JUSTICE & EMPOWERMENT INAUGURATED
Development
of the country is not just the GDP but overall growth in other
sectors, especially health, social justice and empowerment. This
was stated by Shri Pawan Chopra, Secretary, Ministry of Information
and Broadcasting while inaugurating the two-day National Workshop
on "National Iodine Deficiency Disorders Control Programme (NIDDCP),
Reproductive and Child Health (RHD), AIDS Awareness and Social
Justice & Empowerment" being organized by the Directorate
of Field Publicity (DFP). He said that India still has to fight
infectious diseases and Government media units with their intensified
publicity campaign have to prepare people to fight against these
diseases. Appreciating Doordarshan and All India Radio for their
role as pubic service broadcasters, Shri Chopra said that though
AIR has 99 per cent reach in the country but merely giving information
through electronic media alone might not yield the desired results.
A lot of repetition in interaction is required to convince people
at the grass-root level and that can be done by the important
Government media units like DFP and Song & Drama Division,
he said. DFP with its 268 well equipped units has the expertise
to communicate with people even in remote areas and it has the
real task to carry special campaigns for awareness, prevention
and cure of deadly diseases like TB and AIDS etc., and also motivate
people for social justice and empowerment, further said the Secretary.
Speaking on the occasion,
Shri Sahab Singh, Director General, DFP said the officials of
the DFP are well equipped and trained to interact with people
in remote areas where print and electronic media are not reachable.
He assured that all possible efforts would be made to intensify
the awareness campaign, especially at the grass-root level.
Also present on the
occasion were Dr. B.K.Tiwari, Advisor (Nutrition) DGHS, Ministry
of Health & Family Welfare and Ms. Jayat Chandra, Joint Secretary,
Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment. The senior officials
of DFP from all over the country are attending the workshop.
