CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGIES
TO DOMINATE SCIENCE CONGRESS
The 90th Session of the
Indian Science Congress being held in Bangalore in the first week
of January, 2003, will take up for in-depth discussion "Frontier
Science and Cutting-Edge Technologies", especially that are relevant
to the country’s future. The five-day congress as customary will
be inaugurated by the Prime Minister. Hosted jointly by the Indian
Space Research Organisation and the Bangalore University, the
Congress will focus on the optimal use of the advances made by
India in Space technology and applications for the socio-economic
progress of the nation.
The Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation
Dr. K. Kasturirangan, who is the current General President of
the Indian Science Congress, says that this time it will have
plenaries, panels and public fora focusing on specific issues
of the main theme and a special "Science for School Children"
session. The six plenaries will be chaired by eminent scientists
like Dr. R. Chidambaram, Prof. CNR Rao, Dr. Manju Sharma, Dr.
N R Narayana Murthy, Dr. M S Swaminathan and Dr. N K Ganguly.
Panel discussions on the science of human behaviour,
urban transport systems and climate and weather systems will be
held with participation by eminent personalities. There will also
be a special "space summit", with space-vision talks by experts,
live demonstration of space bridge and panel discussions on "Space
Technology/ applications - perspective for the future" to be chaired
by Prof. MGK Menon. A university meet is also being hosted with
focus on science education in varsities all over the country.
Vice Chancellors of various Indian universities will take part.
A session on science for school children and an exhibition show-casing
India’s scientific and technological achievements "Science Expo
2003" also forms part of the Congress. A Vigyan Jyot, symbolising
the eternal flame of knowledge will be lit during the Congress,
another added attraction.
