VACANCY OF JUDGES IN ALLAHABAD HIGH COURT

RAJYA SABHA

As against approved strength of 95 judges in the Allahabad High Court, 59 judges were in position leaving 36 vacancies to be filled up as on October 31, 2002.

After the Supreme Court Judgement of October 6, 1993, read with the Advisory Opinion of October 28, 1998, the process of initiation of proposal for appointment of a judge of a High Court lies with the Chief Justice of that High Court. The Government has, however, been requesting the Chief Justices of the High Courts, Chief Ministers and the Governors of the States, from time to time, including the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and the Chief Minister and Governor of Uttar Pradesh, to initiate proposals for filling up of the present and the vacancies anticipated during the next six months. The Government is processing recommendations of the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court for appointment of 13 persons as judges in that court.

This information was given by the Union Minister of Law and Justice, Shri K. Jana Krishnamurthi in a written reply to a question from Shri Munavvar Hasan in the Rajya Sabha today.
