PROGRESS OF FAST
TRACK COURTS
The States and Union
Territories have notified 1234 Fast Track Courts, so far, out
of 1734 such courts to be constituted before the end of this year.
Nine hundred thirty seven (937) Fast Track Courts have become
functional. These have disposed of 77,016 sessions level criminal
cases.
So far, the States
of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir,
Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Tripura
and Uttaranchal have notified the full number of Fast Track Courts
earmarked for them under an award of the 11th Finance
Commission.
Cases relating to
under trials languishing in jails for more than two years have
been given priority for disposal by the Fast Track Courts.
Meanwhile, the Centre
has urged the States to set up the remaining Fast Track Courts
keeping in view the directions of the Supreme Court of India in
its judgement of May 6, 2002 in Brij Mohan Lal Vs. Union of India
and Others.
