SPECIAL DRIVE TO EXPAND
VOCATIONAL TRAINING FACILITIES

Centre has launched
a special drive to expand vocational training facilities in the
country. For this purpose new vocational training centres are
being set up by utilising existing infrastructural facilities
in the educational institutions/ polytechnics. This was stated
by the Minister of State for Labour Shri Ashok Pradhan in a written
reply in the Lok Sabha today. He said that state governments who
are responsible for opening new Industrial Training Institutes
(ITIs) have been requested to take necessary action in this regard.
Shri Pradhan said that training courses in vocational training
centres to be set up under the drive would commence from 1st
January next year.
There are at present
4644 ITIs/Centres in the country having a total seating capacity
of 6.78 lakh. Southern region has a highest number of 2,298 ITIs/industrial
training centres with a capacity of over 2.96 lakh seats. Tamil
Nadu tops the list in the country by having highest number of
672 ITIs/followed by Kerala with 535 ITIs/ITCs, Andhra Pradesh
with 569 and Karnataka with 507 ITIs/ITCs. Western Region has
got 1,148 ITIs/ITCs out of which 613 are located in Maharastra
and 233 in Gujarat. The Northern Region has 849 ITIs/ITCs followed
by Eastern Region with 349.
