QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED INDEX (BASE 1993-94=100) FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER, 2002


The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of September 2002 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 171.5 which is higher by 6.1% as compared to the month of September 2001.

2. The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of September 2002 stand at 130.7, 178.4, and 159.4 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 1.0%, 7.3% and -0.4% as compared to September 2001. The cumulative growth in the three sectors during April-September, 2002 over the corresponding period of 2001 has been 6.5%, 5.3% and 3.4%, respectively. The overall growth in the General Index during this period has been 5.2%.

3. Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for September 2002, the indices for August 2002 have undergone the first revision and those for June 2002 the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for June 2002 and August 2002.

4. As many as 14 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of September 2002 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products have shown the highest growth of 40.3%, followed by 27.1% in Food Products and 22.4% in Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel). On the other hand, Leather and Leather & Fur Products have shown a negative growth of 36.1% followed by a decline of 32.5% in Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures and 3.2% in Machinery and Equipment other than Transport Equipment.

5. As per Use-based classification, the growth in September 2002 over September 2001 is 1.6% in Basic goods, 15.5% in Capital goods and 1.7% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of (-)12.3% and 25.3% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 13.2%.

6. Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of September 2002, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
